A. What Is Chastity and How Is It Practiced?

1. What is chastity?

The virtue of purity or chastity is the moral habit of integrating sexuality rightly within the person. Chastity moderates sexual desires so that they conform to reason and love. It is a vital virtue that empowers a person to love authentically. When it is corrupted, severe damage is inflicted upon human dignity and family life. Chastity is lived in three distinct states of life: as a single person, during courtship/engagement, and within marriage.

2. How is chastity practiced as a single person?

Individually, chastity means rejecting any deliberate sexual gratification, thereby guarding and educating one's own heart. Chastity is indispensable precisely for this reason: it protects the heart from the decay of selfishness and prepares it for genuine self-giving love.

3. How is chastity practiced during courtship and engagement?

During courtship, chastity excludes all solitary and shared sexual intimacy. It helps the couple express their affection with genuine purity, learning to love each other selflessly without reducing the other to an instrument of pleasure.

4. How is chastity lived within marriage?

The virtue of chastity in marriage consists in the loving and upright expression of marital intimacy with one's spouse, remaining open to the gift of children, while renouncing all disordered and extramarital sexual gratification.

5. Can't I do whatever I want with my own body?

While one has the physical power to do many things with one's body, not all actions are morally upright or beneficial to the human person. For instance, consuming destructive drugs is physically possible, yet clearly harmful and wrong.

6. Is the body an object that we own?

No. The human body is not an external instrument that we possess; rather, the human person is a unified being, simultaneously bodily and spiritual. The body is not foreign to the person, but an intrinsic dimension of who we are. Consequently:
  • Whoever honors the dignity of the body defends the nobility of the human person.
  • Respect for one's own body and the body of others is respect for persons themselves.
  • Whoever degrades or violates a human body violates a human being. This is why stabbing another person is justly punished: a human being has been wounded, not a mere inanimate object.

B. The Benefits of Chastity

1. Chastity elevates human dignity

- In two decisive ways:
  • A human being is neither a consumable commodity nor a utilitarian tool. A person must never be used. When someone is used merely for another's gratification, he or she feels violated, having suffered a direct assault upon personal dignity. In this sense, chastity prevents human beings from being degraded into instruments of transient pleasure.
  • Chastity preserves the sacred nobility proper to the human body and sexual communion. Consider a historical analogy: imagine a royal monarch of past centuries, and picture his royal crown worn at the most solemn occasions. If someone were to take that crown and use it as a dustpan to collect trash, it would constitute an outrage against the dignity of the king. Using the human body solely for physical pleasure degrades sexuality, which God entrusted with the sublime gift of parenthood and marital union.

2. Chastity fosters self-respect and reverence for others

- This flows directly from the former principle: we naturally treat with reverence that which we deem truly worthy. When the sacred dignity of the body is honored in sexual life, it becomes far easier to treat others with justice and reverence in every other sphere. Conversely, if the body is instrumentalized for selfish sexual indulgence, it easily becomes mistreated whenever any other selfish whim arises. Sexual permissiveness thus unleashes widespread moral and interpersonal damage.

3. Can you give examples?

  • Domestic violence is an assault and distinct from lust, yet they stem from the same root: treating a human person's body as a dispensable object. If another's body is seen merely as an instrument for my pleasure, it becomes easy to unleash my rage upon that same body whenever I am frustrated: if it pleases me, I use it; if it displeases me, I strike it.
  • Unbridled sexual license is also closely linked with substance abuse and alcoholism, because both involve the reckless degradation of the human body. While not every individual suffers from all vices simultaneously, yielding repeatedly to sensory indulgence in one realm severely weakens moral resistance in others.

4. Chastity liberates from a debilitating slavery

- Within human sexuality there exists an upright, natural orientation that directs husband and wife toward family life, generous parenthood, and lifelong mutual communion. This desire to embrace children together in marriage is noble and wholesome, and the profound bodily and emotional pleasures accompanying it are good and intended by the Creator. On the other hand, disordered lust exerts a chaotic pull toward chasing transient pleasures indiscriminately, with anyone and in any way. This impulse is disordered and must be governed. If one continually surrenders to it, the craving intensifies through repeated gratification, developing into an obsessive addiction that enslaves the soul. Chastity shatters these chains, restoring to man true mastery over his own actions.

5. Chastity protects and expands the capacity to love

- Uncontrolled sexual impulse inexorably drives a person toward selfishness—the relentless pursuit of personal gratification. This enslavement to immediate cravings cripples the capacity to love, for authentic love consists in seeking the true good of the beloved, even at the expense of personal comfort. Love and selfishness cannot coexist: cultivating one inevitably diminishes the other. When a person conquers selfishness and seeks the genuine good of others, he ennobles both them and himself, expanding his own heart. Chastity is therefore an indispensable prerequisite that purifies the soul and empowers it for authentic, enduring love.

C. Is Chastity Possible? How Can It Be Lived?

1. Is chastity truly possible today?

In many modern environments, prevailing cultural attitudes make chastity challenging. Yet it is always possible with the help of well-proven aids, which can be grouped into three dimensions: personal effort, divine grace, and human support. These means can be exercised both in the heat of temptation and proactively as ongoing moral training.

2. How do we receive God's help to live chastely?

God's grace in the struggle for purity is obtained through persevering prayer, frequent reception of the sacraments (Confession and the Eucharist), and filial devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. We must implore divine assistance with humility and perseverance. The very act of prayer provides immediate strength by lifting the heart above earthly cravings.

3. Why is humility so important for chastity?

Pride keeps man haughty and self-reliant before God, whereas humility establishes him in truth before his Creator. Consequently:
  • Humility is necessary to grow in any virtue, for "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
  • God's life-giving grace encompasses both soul and body. When the soul rebels against God through pride, interior harmony is shattered and the body in turn rebels against the soul. But when the soul humbles itself reverently before the Lord, the body more readily obeys the enlightened direction of the will.

4. How can other people help us live chastely?

To make steady progress in the Christian life, spiritual direction is invaluable: a competent spiritual guide provides counsel, perspective, and encouragement that lighten the struggle. This assistance is fruitful in proportion to one's prior sincerity. In matters of purity, opening one's soul with transparent honesty requires an effort of humility, but yields a double benefit: beyond receiving sound counsel, it strikes a blow against pride.

5. How can couples support each other in courtship?

It is essential that boyfriend and girlfriend share a mutual conviction to live chastely, actively helping each other protect their hearts, their personal dignity, and their authentic love. A parallel commitment applies to married couples: encouraging one another to embrace children generously, to foster delicate mutual reverence, and to remain unreservedly faithful.

6. What personal efforts are needed to cultivate chastity?

Personal effort must be exercised across several practical fronts:
Resolute Decision to Fight Continually renew the firm resolve to maintain a clean heart. Setting short-term goals—such as persevering until the coming weekend—strengthens determination.
Fleeing the Occasions of Sin Whenever certain environments or media lead to temptation, drastically reduce or eliminate them: internet misuse, unwholesome television, nightclubs, provocative beaches… Sacrificing a few pastimes is trivial to anyone who truly values love.
Avoiding Triggers and Catalysts Cut off the early sensory sparks that awaken disordered instincts. Temptation is far easier to conquer at its inception.
Custody of the Eyes Vision is intimately connected to desire; mastering one's gaze educates and protects the heart. Train yourself by deliberately turning your eyes away from provocative imagery that curiosity prompts you to view.
Generous Service to Others Actively serving others teaches the heart to love selflessly rather than consume.
Righteous Indignation Evoke a healthy, vigorous rejection of the temptation. Righteous indignation cuts through sentimental daydreams and indolence. (While anger itself must be ruled by reason, a firm and spirited internal rejection is very effective in repelling temptation).
Pre-prepared Counter-thoughts Have brief, positive spiritual aspirations ready to deploy instantly when temptations strike: "Lord, give me a clean heart," "I want to be free from this slavery," "Holy Mary, Mother of pure love, pray for me." Short, decisive thoughts of rejection are equally useful: "That person belongs to someone else; that fleeting pleasure is a trap."
Counter-images Prepare engaging, healthy mental imagery to displace impure thoughts: recalling an exciting sports moment, a memorable event, or a vivid intellectual problem that captivates the attention.
Mortification and Self-Denial The habitual practice of denying bodily whims in small daily matters trains the will to govern sensory impulses in sexual matters.
Sobriety in Food and Drink Moderating one's appetite at the table reinforces bodily self-mastery. For example, keeping dinner light is a time-tested aid when temptations tend to arise at night.
Dietary Moderation Saint Hildegard of Bingen traditionally observed that excessive indulgence in heavy, rich meats can over-stimulate sensory passions.
Diligent Study and Hard Work Saint Thomas Aquinas noted that vigorous intellectual and physical effort tires the body and absorbs mental energy, acting as a natural remedy against lust.

7. What are some practical examples of daily mortification?

Simple daily acts of self-denial that train the body to obey the spirit include:
  • Adopting upright, attentive sitting postures rather than slouching, mastering the sense of touch which is so closely connected to sexual feelings.
  • Taking a brisk shower without lingering unnecessarily for physical indulgence.
  • Eating with moderation, curbing unnecessary snacking and second helpings.
  • Practicing brief delays: waiting a few moments before drinking when thirsty or eating when hungry, training the will to govern impulses of immediate gratification.

8. Is there a prayerful devotion for confronting strong temptations?

A time-tested spiritual practice is to imagine entering into the holy wound of the right hand of Christ crucified—listening to the heartbeat of His love, contemplating the blood He shed for our redemption, and finding in His sacrifice a secure fortress of refuge. This devotion combines several remedies at once: a powerful counter-image, flight from temptation, filial love, and humble prayer to our Savior. (The same applies to the left hand or the pierced side: what matters is meditating devoutly on the Passion of our Lord).
