Vocation
Quick ideas about vocation. What is vocation? How is it discovered? How should one respond?
1. What is a vocation?
A vocation is a call from God to a concrete path of love and service. It gives meaning to one's life and asks for a generous response.
2. Does everyone have a vocation?
Everyone is called to holiness and to love God. Within this universal call, God may indicate a particular path: marriage, priesthood, consecrated life, apostolate in the middle of the world, or another mission.
3. How does God call?
God can call through prayer, events, desires for good, the example of others, spiritual advice, or an inner restlessness that persists and points toward service.
4. How is a vocation discerned?
With prayer, sincerity, good formation, spiritual direction, and readiness to do God's will. One should not decide only by emotion, fear, comfort, or external pressure.
5. Is vocation a gift?
Yes. It is a gift of love from God. It also brings responsibility, because the person called receives graces and a mission for the good of others.
6. Does vocation require sacrifice?
Usually yes, because love always asks for self-giving. But sacrifice does not destroy happiness; it purifies it and gives life a deeper joy.
7. What helps one respond?
Prayer, generosity, humility, purity of intention, trust in God, advice from prudent people, and the courage to say yes without delaying indefinitely.
8. Can one be happy after saying yes?
Yes. Fidelity to God's call brings peace and fruitfulness, even when there are difficulties. The happiest life is the one that follows God's will with love.
