A. The Search for Meaning
1. Why does the human being search for meaning?
Because man is not content simply to survive: he wants to understand the ultimate purpose of his life. No animal ponders its cosmic origin or ultimate destiny; the human person inevitably does. «Man is made for happiness as a bird is made to fly», and that innate aspiration toward complete happiness is indelibly inscribed upon the human heart.
2. Why does no temporal achievement fully satisfy the heart?
It is a universal human experience: one intensely desires a particular car, job promotion, trip, or home; one achieves it; and within a short time the heart restlessly demands something more. This is not because earthly goods are deceitful: it is because they are finite, while our capacity for desiring is boundless. That interior dissatisfaction is not a design flaw, but a vital clue: a sign that we carry within us a longing for the infinite that no temporal good of this world can ever quench.
3. Success, happiness, and meaning are not identical
- Success means reaching external goals; it can readily coexist with profound inner emptiness, as the lives of many admired yet miserable figures reveal.
- Happiness is an emotional and spiritual state that ebbs and flows with changing circumstances.
- Meaning is far deeper: knowing why I exist and for whom I live, so that even failure and human pain have a purposeful place.
B. The Longing for God
4. Can there be meaning without God?
There are genuine partial meanings in life—human love, professional work, family, art—yet none of them answers the ultimate questions: why do I exist at all, what happens after death, and why does evil exist? That inextinguishable longing for total fulfillment points beyond the created world, toward God.
5. Isn't the desire for God merely a comforting psychological illusion?
The argument can be turned on its head: thirst does not prove that water is an imaginary invention; rather, thirst exists precisely because water is real. Every deep, natural desire of man corresponds to a real object: hunger to food, loneliness to companionship. It would be bizarre if the deepest, most persistent longing of the human soul—the yearning for infinite life and love—were the solitary longing that corresponded to nothing. «The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God».
6. Where does this longing find its definitive answer?
In the fact that God Himself came out to meet us (Revelation). He did not merely create us: He knew us and willed us as His beloved children from all eternity. Saint Augustine, who explored virtually every worldly pleasure before finding God, captured this forever: «You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You».
C. A Meaningful Life
7. What gives concrete meaning to my daily routine?
Discovering that I am called by God to a unique personal mission (vocation) and that I have the capacity to love. Meaning is not found sitting idly on a sofa pondering existence: it is lived dynamically by loving God and others, placing our professional work, family duties, and ordinary hours at the service of that love.
8. What if I feel an inner emptiness that nothing seems to fill?
That void can be great good news: an unmistakable sign that your soul was made for something infinitely greater. Acknowledging that emptiness, rather than drowning it out with noise and distractions, can be the very threshold of your search for God.
9. How can we talk about meaning to someone living without reflection?
Far more through our life than through abstract theories. A person living with deep peace, genuine joy, and selfless dedication awakens questions in others far more effectively than elaborate arguments. In a culture that often sidesteps the question of God, the most compelling testimony is a quiet, authentic happiness that cannot be hidden (Christian witness).
