THE BIBLE
  • A. What is the Bible? Jewish Christian Approaches.
  • B. Interpretation of the Bible.
  • C. Divine inspiration of the Bible.
  • D. Use of the Bible.
A. WHAT IS THE BIBLE?

1. What is the Bible? Bible is called the set of texts inspired by God to lead men to heaven. The books before Jesus Christ, are called the Old Testament. The other texts are the New Testament. The divine inspiration of the Bible is endorsed by the Judeo-Christian tradition.

2. What do the Jews say, about the Bible? Jews only accept as inspired, the books of the Old Testament. They usually understand quite literally and rigorously on detailed applications.

3. What do Protestants say about the Bible? In the Protestant theory still rules the slogans of "scripture alone" and "free examination", who reject the Tradition and Magisterium to affirm that each one interprets the Bible in their own way. For this reason many divisions have emerged in Protestantism. However, in practice, Protestants interpret the Bible according to the tradition of religious branch, and according to explanations of its leaders. It is logical that way.

4. What the Orthodox say about the Bible? In general, the Orthodox agree with Catholics on his vision of the Bible.

5. What Catholics say about the Bible? Catholics also accept that the Bible is inspired by God. As for biblical interpretation, Catholics follow the Tradition and the Magisterium of the Pope.

B. INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE

1. Does the Bible needs interpretation? Anyone reading a book understands in a way that may be different from the way of understanding of another reader. This is correct also to read the Bible. However, it may happen that some reading obtained opposite conclusions to what God wants to say. Therefore, it is also personal opinions, there is an authentic interpretation to ensure fidelity to the divine will. Among Catholics, this task is performed by the Magisterium of the Church, according to Tradition.

2. Why Catholics enjoy this authentic interpretation? Because Jesus Christ chose well, as shown in the Bible itself:

  • Jesus chose Peter as head and shepherd of his Church and said: "whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven" (Mt 16, 19).
  • Jesus confirms and improves the old testament. However, in his instructions to the apostles never speak of following the Bible, but preach to him, his teachings.
  • Jesus Christ told the Apostles: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you" (Mt 28, 19-20 ). (That I have commanded Jesus taught orally as well).
  • Jesus would not leave any written text, but preferred to choose his apostles as transmitters of his teaching with the help of the Holy Spirit. The teachings of Christ are equally or more important than those contained in the Old Testament. And the Lord chose to transmit orally giving a decisive category to Tradition and the Magisterium of the Church. Jesus did not write, preferring to leave us with Peter.
3. Is not it strange that some people interpret the word of God? It is not uncommon, if these men have received a divine mandate to do so, teach all nations. The pope and the bishops remain-logically-a great respect to the biblical texts, studying well content, and to give an interpretation act under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the same Jesus Christ who cares for his Church: "Know that I I am with you always until the end of the world "(Mt 28, 19-20).

4. Is not better that each one interprets the Bible in their own way? This is not convenient, because with great ease, everyone can understand what they like taking a text here or there, regardless of other biblical texts and other teachings of Jesus Christ. Each one invent their own religion in which he would be the one to dictate the rules. And a religion invented by oneself is certainly false.

5. Why God has chosen to do so? The Lord wanted to join the Bible with Tradition and the Magisterium, seeking the good of man:

  • The arrogance and self-sufficiency do great harm to man. It was the sin of the devil who wanted independence from God. We are not gods but creatures, and autonomy from God destroys us. Therefore, the Lord warns the pride and prefer not everyone who is self-design the Bible.
  • God created man as a social being: "It is not good that man should be alone" (Gn 2, 18). Neither man saves himself, but it is human nature to move toward the Lord with the help of other men. Other men baptized and confess. Other men will help to understand the Bible.
6. Any examples of biblical interpretation? In the Old Testament prescribes certain rules limited to a time or situation. In the New Testament are corrected some. Others were subsequently modified. This is not acting against the Bible, but for its proper interpretation, seeking to do what God wants, distinguishing what to do always from what was only circumstantial and temporary rules.

7. An example? In the Old Testament were commanded to stone adulteresses, do not eat pork, sacrifice two lambs each day, perform circumcision (this was very important), and so on. In the New Testament, we read how God calls Peter to change some things, especially the big change to abolish circumcision. Apostles gathered with Peter decreed: "We decided the Holy Spirit and we will not further burden than necessary: to abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from things strangled and from fornication. Do well to keep yourselves from these things "(Acts 15: 28-29). This biblical text shows how the Lord leads the Apostles. Here, the Old and New Testament apparently opposed, but is still God who guides his people through Moses before, then with Peter, now with the Pope. It is the divine style of acting.

8. Does the Catholic Church prohibits reflect on the Bible? No, no. Reading and meditating on the Bible is highly recommended in the Catholic Church, if one reads it with a desire to pray, learn and get closer to God. Above all it is very advisable to read the Gospels.

C. DIVINE INSPIRATION OF THE BIBLE

1. What does it mean that the Bible is inspired by God? The divine inspiration of the Bible means that God Himself is the author of these books, even used to write, a human instrument. The human author writes with style, but under divine inspiration, so that the writing really is God's word.

2. How do we know that the Bible is inspired by God? This inspiration is known for two main reasons:

  • The Lord speaking to men added to his words, a mighty acts, miracles that testify such phrases as divine.
  • Tradition and the Magisterium transmit these texts to be authentic, differentiating them from other books.
3. What miracles have there been? In the Old Testament tell of many miracles, especially around Moses. In the New Testament are well known and abundant in Jesus Christ. Also collected, performed prodigies of the Apostles. Currently, there are still miracles from time to time.

D. USE OF THE BIBLE

1. How to use the Bible? Theologians use the scriptures for their studies. Catholics use the Bible to learn and pray, not to resolve issues. To resolve questions, we have the catechism.

2. Not to resolve issues? Protestants and Jews wonder where does the Bible say this?, As if they were all great theologians are set to discuss the Scriptures, with results not always accurate because not all are biblical scholars. Catholics at the time to resolve doubts, rather ask, what the Catechism says about this? And we get great advantages: the catechism is clearer, more developed teaching together, and is as safe as the Bible. To resolve issues, the Bible claims, research and interpretation that are not available to any amateur. To pray is wonderful.

3. Mistakes? Around the Bible, there are ways of reasoning that lead to mistakes. Generally agree on the pretense of using the Bible as a system to answer questions, forgetting Tradition and the Magisterium. Let's see some erroneous arguments:

  • "Jesus never said that”.- This statement leads to several errors, because in the Bible does not appear all that the Lord said, and there are things we must do if Jesus did not mention it. For example, Jesus probably never spoke of abortion, drugs, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, the use of contraceptives, etc.. Instead, the Lord spoke several times of the primacy of Peter and the mission of the apostles. Jesus did not say everything, but we left the Pope as teacher and guide, teach and lead us to Him.
  • “This is not in the Bible”.- Another phrase that leads to similar errors, because not everything is in the Bible. Christians do not follow the Bible but Christ, led by the Pope.
  • "Look at what the Bible says" .- Another wrong mindset where the Bible is again being used to resolve issues without being experts. If one adheres only to the Bible, you can choose to be stoning adulteresses, that polygamy is allowed, and to be circumcised family, animals included... Let the experts to discuss the Scriptures and we enjoy his pious reading. To resolve issues, we use the catechism -and we see full of biblical quotations, well chosen-.
