A. The Central Mystery of Faith
1. What is the Most Holy Trinity?
It is the supreme mystery of one only God in three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are not three gods, nor three consecutive names or masks for a single actor, but three really distinct Persons who share one indivisible divine nature.
2. Is saying «three» and «one» a logical contradiction?
No, because "three" and "one" are not predicated of the same aspect. God is one in divine substance and nature, and three in Persons. It would be an absurd contradiction to assert that God is one God and three gods, or one Person and three Persons; Christianity has never taught that. It is a mystery that transcends human reason—as was entirely to be expected: a God who fit neatly inside our limited minds would be suspiciously small—yet it never violates reason.
3. Why is it called the central mystery of Christianity?
Because it reveals who God is in His eternal interior life, and from this mystery every other Christian truth flows. In reality, we live immersed in it daily: we were baptized «in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit», the Sign of the Cross names the Trinity, and Christian prayers conclude by giving glory to the three Persons. Everything God has accomplished for our salvation is the common work of the Trinity.
B. How We Know It
4. Can the Trinity be discovered by human reason alone?
No. That God exists can be known with certainty by natural reason from the created universe (God); but that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit we know exclusively because He chose to reveal it (Revelation). It is the intimate secret of His interior communion which He lovingly shared with us, just as a friend reveals secrets that no stranger could ever deduce.
5. How did God reveal the Trinity to us?
Jesus Christ unveiled it through His words, deeds, and presence: He reveals the Father who sent Him, proclaims Himself the eternal Son of God, and promises the Holy Spirit whom He and the Father send upon the Church (Incarnation). In seeing Jesus we see the Father, and at Pentecost we receive the Holy Spirit.
6. Who is each divine Person?
All three Persons are equally and wholly God, distinguished solely by their eternal relations of origin:
- The Father, the source without origin, from whom the Son is eternally generated and the Spirit proceeds.
- The Son, eternally begotten of the Father, who became man for our salvation.
- The Holy Spirit, who eternally proceeds from the Father and the Son as their mutual personal Love.
7. Are earthly analogies (the shamrock, water states, the triangle) useful?
As introductory crutches, yes; as adequate theological explanations, no. Saint Patrick's three-leaf shamrock or water as ice, liquid, and vapor help evoke "three in one," but all analogies break down: the leaflets are separate parts of a leaf, and water cannot be ice, steam, and liquid in the same manner simultaneously. In God, each Person is the whole and undivided Godhead. We may use analogies, provided we recognize their limitations.
C. What It Has to Do with Me
8. Why do we say that «God is love» because of the Trinity?
Because God is not an isolated solitude that began to love only after creating other beings. From all eternity, the Father loves the Son, the Son loves the Father, and that eternal Love is the Holy Spirit. God is Love in His very essence—an eternal, fruitful communion of Persons—and He created us precisely to bring us into that communion.
9. What personal relationship do I have with the three Persons?
An intimate, real relationship: through sanctifying grace we become children of the Father in the Son, and the Holy Spirit dwells within our souls as in a temple (divine filiation). The Holy Trinity does not dwell in remote cosmic distance: God dwells in the soul in grace. For this reason, we can converse with each divine Person with child-like affection in mental prayer.
10. Simple practices to foster devotion to the Trinity
- Making the Sign of the Cross with recollected reverence: praying to the Trinity with the body.
- Reciting the «Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit», the ancient doxology of the Church.
- Beginning and ending each day in the Name of the Trinity.
- Imitating the divine life: just as the three Persons live in a pure communion of mutual love, the Christian pursues unity and self-giving in the family, professional work, and friendships.
