Mary, Mother of God

Our Lady is the Mother of God because she is the mother of Jesus Christ, who is true God.

God is eternal. He always exists. No one has created him; precisely he is the one who has created the world. However, the second person of the Trinity wished to become man and was born in Bethlehem of the Virgin Mary.

Jesus Christ is one single person, who is perfect God and perfect man. Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, with all its consequences.

When a child is born, God creates the soul and gives life. The parents collaborate in the bodily part. However, they are not parents only of the body, but of the person who is born. Thus Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ. And since Jesus Christ is God, Mary is the mother of God.

Logically, the Lord wished to honor his mother with great gifts, elevating her dignity above all creatures. And so she was Immaculate and full of grace.

The texts of the Bible that mention our Lady as mother of Jesus recognize the divine motherhood of Mary, since Jesus is true God. In addition to those texts, others can be cited:

• "The Virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, who will be called Emmanuel, which means God-with-us" (Is 7, 14).
• "that the mother of my Lord should come to visit me" (Lk 1, 43).
• "the one to be born holy will be called the Son of God" (Lk 1, 31).
