Truth
Quick ideas about truth. What is truth? Truth in thought, speech, conscience, and life.
1. What is truth?
Truth is the agreement between reality and what is understood, said, or lived. A thought is true when it agrees with reality; speech is truthful when it agrees with what one thinks; life is true when actions agree with what is good.
2. Are there different kinds of truth?
Yes. We can speak of truth in knowledge, truth in words, truth in conscience, and truth in life. These are related, but each compares something different: reality, thought, speech, moral judgment, and conduct.
3. Why is truth important?
Because human beings need reality in order to live well. Error confuses intelligence, lies damage trust, and a false conscience leads to bad actions.
4. Can conscience be wrong?
Yes. A person may act according to conscience and still be wrong if conscience has been badly formed. For this reason conscience must seek truth and be educated by reason, natural law, and Christian doctrine.
5. Is truth opposed to freedom?
No. Truth helps freedom, because freedom is meant to choose the good. A person who ignores truth is more easily dominated by passions, fashions, or manipulation.
6. How does one seek truth?
By studying seriously, listening to wise people, being humble before reality, avoiding self-deception, and asking God for light. Sincerity is essential because pride and convenience easily distort judgment.
7. What is the religious truth?
The religious truth is the truth about God and about the way to reach Him. Christians recognize that God has revealed Himself fully in Jesus Christ and guides His Church so that this truth may be transmitted faithfully.
