A. Elegance in general

1. What is elegance?

In a broad sense, elegance is the habit of getting right the appropriate way to behave, in a manner that is admirable. It includes two requirements:
  • That the decision is correct.
  • That it is carried out in an admirable way. This is what characterizes elegance, but if the first condition is lacking, it would be a corrupt elegance.

2. Examples of elegance?

  • In science, a problem is solved elegantly if the solution is reached in a precise, clear, simple manner. On the other hand, even if the same conclusion is reached, there is no elegance if the path is convoluted or confused.
  • In discussions, a person expresses their ideas with elegance if they do so skillfully and courteously, without causing hurt.
  • In sport, there is elegance if one plays well and with sportsmanship. On the other hand, even if one wins, there is no elegance if the play was coarse and rough.

3. Characteristics of elegance in general?

To make correct decisions in an admirable way, several qualities are needed:
  • Prudence and charity, to decide well, seeking the good for all.
  • Order and good taste, to act according to a correct scale of values and following appropriate proportions and style.
  • Courtesy and kindness, which contribute to elegance in dealings with others. Etc.

B. Elegance in fashion

1. What is elegance in fashion?

Elegance in fashion is the habit of dressing in an appropriate and admirable way.
  • Appropriate fashion is that which favors the dignity of the human person, and the other ends of fashion: practical, ethical and ornamental.
  • Admirable fashion is that which stands out for its good judgment and good taste.

2. When is fashion admirable?

Admirable fashion combines several characteristics: beauty, order, proportion, good taste, well-chosen color combinations, discretion, simplicity, grace, poise, correctness. One sees that way of dressing and thinks: that is the right choice.

3. When is fashion not admirable?

Fashion is not admirable for several reasons: coarseness, vulgarity, crudeness, extravagance, kitsch, exaggeration. One sees that way of dressing and thinks: ugh.

4. When does fashion favor human dignity?

Fashion contributes to human dignity when it clearly distinguishes man from animals, highlighting the spiritual dimension of man. For example:
  • It must cover man sufficiently, unlike animals.
  • It highlights the head and hands, which are more exclusively human.

5. Specific characteristics of elegant fashion?

Let us look at some details that determine fashion as elegant:
  • The less clothing, the less elegant.
  • The more it incites to sex, the less elegant. Tight-fitting and sexy clothing is not elegant. It is immoral, coarse and vulgar; it belongs to prostitutes.
  • What is dirty, torn and stained is not elegant. Neither is what is wrinkled when it implies carelessness. The care of clothing is elegant, and distinctive of the human being.
  • Excessive adornments are not elegant, since they center attention on the adornment, not on the person. Simplicity and sobriety in adornment are elegant.
  • A good hairstyle or a hat are elegant, because they center attention on the head. On the other hand, if the hairstyle or hat are excessively showy, they are not elegant, because they absorb attention and divert it from the person. Earrings and a necklace are elegant, unless they are elaborate. A bracelet, a ring and a watch are usually elegant because they embellish the hands, unless they are conspicuous.

6. Is it easy to be elegant?

Elegance is both easy and difficult. Easy, because it is accessible to anyone, and does not depend on money or social standing. Difficult, because true elegance comes from within the person, as a result of the harmonious qualities one possesses. And qualities are acquired through persevering effort.

7. If one has few qualities, can one be elegant?

Anyone can and should dress elegantly. This effort to dress appropriately is beneficial for oneself and for those around, and helps to improve in various qualities. However, at first it will be noticeable that something of naturalness is lacking.
