1. What is constancy?
Constancy is the habit of sustaining effort over time. It is intimately linked to the virtue of fortitude: both consist in overcoming obstacles. Constancy, however, specifically addresses one particular challenge: the sheer duration of the effort.
2. Is constancy necessary?
Constancy is an indispensable quality for attaining any worthwhile goal, because valuable achievements are never won through an isolated burst of effort, but are the fruit of patient, persevering conquest. Life would be simple if requiring a few minutes of exertion were enough. Almost anyone is capable of a heroic, costly burst if results are achieved immediately. But in reality, this rarely suffices; one must sustain effort over time: that is constancy.
3. What are further benefits of constancy?
Constancy also empowers a person to aim for noble ideals, strengthening interior self-motivation and hope. When a person knows from experience that he possesses perseverance, distant horizons do not intimidate him. He knows that his constancy guarantees steady progress; his hope is revitalized and he boldly embarks upon demanding goals.
4. Where can we see the necessity of constancy?
There are countless examples across all dimensions of life:
- To acquire any virtue, repeated acts are required over time: constancy.
- Professional success demands constancy. Athletic achievement requires constancy. Academic study and lifelong learning require constancy...
- The virtue of patience is often synonymous with constant endurance. Certain professional or domestic trials require heroic doses of patience sustained over years.
- In the spiritual life, constancy is equally essential, for holiness is not attained in a single moment, but through faithful, persevering correspondence. As Sacred Scripture exhorts:
«Do not grow weary in well-doing» (2 Thess 3:13)
5. Must we always finish whatever we have started?
Not always. There are occasions when one realizes that the chosen path is mistaken or dead-ended; in such cases, prudence dictates turning back or pivoting. This happens frequently in scientific research, during a cycling route, in business strategy, etc.
6. Is constancy linked to loyalty?
Yes. Loyalty consists in fidelity to one's pledged word and commitments, and fulfilling commitments sustained over years requires unwavering constancy.
7. How can we practice constancy?
There are many fields where constancy can be exercised, almost always centered on finishing what has been started:
- Completing a collection until finished. Completing a puzzle once begun.
- Continuing an excursion to the summit—unless safety prudently counsels turning back.
- Finishing household chores and professional assignments thoroughly. Working through math exercises until completely solved.
- Never turning to entertainment or games until homework is fully finished.
