Your identity is still being shaped

Mark as read

Knowing yourself does not consist only in discovering something finished, but in responding to what you are called to be.

Sometimes you look for a definitive definition of yourself: traits, talents, wounds, or a label that explains every reaction. That knowledge helps, but it can become a cage. Your identity includes a received history and also decisions that do not yet exist. Every habit, relationship, and response to grace shapes who you come to be. You do not invent your nature from scratch, but neither are you an already closed object. That is why a present limitation does not always deserve the final word. You can integrate the past, ask for help, and develop new capacities. The question 'who am I?' is completed by another: 'whom am I called to love?' Mature identity has roots and, at the same time, direction.

Key idea

Personal identity integrates what is received with the decisions and vocation that are still shaping who we come to be.

Your challenge for this idea

Reframe a label you use to limit yourself—'that's just how I am'—as a concrete capacity you can still train.
