That we are divided is not normal

Mark as read

It hurts Jesus to see us separated: he prayed for the exact opposite.

Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants... we have been separated for centuries and almost take it as normal, as if it were part of the scenery. But it is not. On the last night, Jesus prayed for the exact opposite: 'that they may all be one'. Our division hurts him. It is not fixed by pretending differences do not exist or by abandoning truth. It is worked on through prayer, truly getting to know one another, and loving other Christians as brothers and sisters who share baptism, even if we are not yet in full communion. You also contribute your part: praying for unity, treating those who believe differently without caricature, and rejoicing in what is good in them. Unity begins with how you look at the person next to you.

Key idea

Division among Christians is not normal: Jesus prayed for unity, and to it we are called.

Your challenge for this idea

Pray today for Christian unity and speak respectfully of another denomination instead of caricaturing it.
