Respect for your parents does not expire

As you grow older, the relationship with your parents changes. You no longer have to ask for permission or obey what they dictate: you make your decisions and lead your life. That is healthy and expected. But one thing does not change with age: respect and gratitude. No longer depending on them does not give you license for contempt, bluntness, or neglect. They are still your parents, and that always carries weight. Sometimes friction comes from mishandled independence: being an adult is confused with cold distance. Maturing is the opposite: relating as equals, with affection, without becoming a child or treating them as a nuisance.
