Lifelong love is played out today

We imagine lifelong love as a grand promise: an enormous "yes" spoken once and settled for the remainder of our lives. But it is not sustained like that. It is built in the present moment, and in the next moment, and in the next: loving day after day, almost always in little things. Fidelity is not the feat of a single heroic moment; it is the sum of many instances of "today I keep choosing you." Breakfast, enduring a bad day, repeated forgiveness, the usual everyday gesture. Nothing spectacular, and yet right there is where forever is truly won or lost. That is why it does not depend only on your own strength, which is limited and easily tires. It leans on God, who invented love and sustains what you cannot manage to sustain on your own. You provide the today; forever gets built out of many todays in a row.
