Keep inviting them even if they say no

Mark as read

When someone is depressed, canceling doesn't mean they don't want you close.

A friend stops coming to plans. They say yes and cancel at the last minute, take days to reply or don't reply at all. It's easy to draw the wrong conclusion: that you no longer matter to them, that they've become rude. And little by little you stop calling. In depression, pulling away is part of the illness. Leaving the house takes enormous effort, and every unanswered message weighs like one more debt. It's precisely when they ask for it least that they most need someone who doesn't give up. There's no need to push or make them feel guilty. It's enough to keep counting on them: invite them without pressure, send messages that don't require an answer, suggest small plans. And, if you see them in a very bad way, gently encourage them to seek professional help.

Key idea

Someone who withdraws because of depression is helped when you don't withdraw.

Your challenge for this idea

Today, send someone who has been pulling away a message that doesn't need an answer, just so they know you're still there.
