In the family, roles change over the years

Mark as read

The one who supported you yesterday may need help tomorrow that preserves their autonomy and dignity.

The family goes through seasons. Children stop being children, parents grow older, and an illness can alter responsibilities in a few weeks. Clinging to the old division generates frustration. Adapting does not mean erasing history or treating someone who needs support as incapable. It consists in discussing new needs, sharing burdens, and allowing each person to continue contributing. Caring for an elderly parent does not turn them into a child; asking an adult child for help does not erase past authority. Role changes can hurt because they recall the passage of time. They also offer a beautiful reciprocity: received love finds another way to return. A mature family does not freeze its members in the photograph of an earlier stage.

Key idea

Family maturity adjusts responsibilities to each stage without erasing the dignity, history, or contribution of its members.

Your challenge for this idea

Talk with your family about a responsibility that no longer fits the current stage and agree on a more realistic division.
