Idealizing outside can make you unjust inside

Mark as read

Comparing other people's best moments with the daily fatigue of your home distorts reality.

Outside the home you see selected gestures: the attentive friend, the smiling family, or the brilliant coworker. At home you know defects, repetitions, and bad days. The comparison is tilted from the very beginning. Idealizing what is distant can make you interpret as mediocrity that which in reality is intimacy. The person who lives with you cannot maintain a continuous presentation; they also offer you their vulnerability and endure yours. This does not force you to deny family problems or settle for harmful relationships. It asks you to compare with justice and to look again at the habitual goods that have stopped surprising you. Affection is renewed when you remember that the ordinary is not worth less for being familiar. Giving thanks anew corrects the fantasy that real life always happens outside.

Key idea

Unequal comparison between the distant idealized and the ordinary close-at-hand erodes gratitude and family life.

Your challenge for this idea

Write down three daily goods of someone in your family that you stopped appreciating from seeing them every day, and thank them for one of them.
