How can God have a mother?

God has always existed; nobody created him. So how can he have a mother? The answer lies in who Jesus is: one single person who is at the same time true God and true man. Mary isn't the mother of one part of Jesus, but of all of him. And since Jesus is God, Mary is the Mother of God. Something similar happens with any mother: parents cooperate in forming their child's body and God creates the soul, but nobody says a mother is only the mother of the body. She is mother of the whole person. That's why on the first day of the year the Church celebrates Holy Mary, Mother of God. Starting the year with this feast is placing it in the hands of the woman who held God himself in her arms.
