Honoring imperfect parents

Mark as read

You do not need perfect parents to be at peace with them.

Honoring parents does not mean pretending that everything was ideal. There are harsh childhoods, absences, and mistakes that left a mark. The commandment does not say that parents are perfect; it speaks of what you can do with what you received. And there is something liberating in that: your full life does not depend on them having done everything well. Many people, after a difficult childhood, have lived luminous lives because they reconciled with their history without denying it. Honoring can simply be giving thanks for life, stopping constant judgment, and forgiving what you can gradually forgive. It is not covering up what hurt; it is not staying tied to it. Looking at it from God weighs less than carrying it all on your own.

Key idea

You can reconcile with your history even if your parents were not perfect.

Your challenge for this idea

Take a small step today: thank your parents for something concrete, or pray for them if the bond is broken.
