Friendship with Jesus begins by letting him act

You can live the faith as a checklist of performances: praying, serving, fulfilling duties, and demonstrating faithfulness. Without realizing it, friendship turns into a personal project over which you hold complete control. Jesus calls friends those who have first been sought, taught, and loved. Letting him act means receiving his word, his forgiveness, and his company without rushing to pay him back. The gift always precedes the response. This receptivity does not produce passivity. Whoever knows they are loved finds fresh reasons to act, but no longer works to purchase closeness. Prayer can begin by laying out life just as it is and allowing Christ to take the initiative. A friend is not only someone for whom you do things; they are someone whose presence you allow to transform you.
