The family introduces fraternity into the world

Mark as read

Learning to live with someone you did not choose prepares you to recognize the stranger as a brother.

Within a family you share daily living space with people who differ in age, temperament, and personal tastes. You did not choose them by natural affinity. That shared daily life can become an authentic first school of fraternity. There you learn that the other person has real needs even when it is inconvenient for you, that family goods are shared, and that an argument does not sever the bond. If the home closes in upon itself, however, that school remains incomplete. Family belonging is called to expand into hospitality, generous service, and social concern. What is learned inside the home can help you treat as a neighbor anyone who does not share your surname, culture, or ideas. The family brings fraternity to the world when its love does not build a border, but trains hearts capable of opening it up.

Key idea

Family living educates a fraternity that reaches its full meaning when it opens up to service and hospitality outside its own circle.
