A double life begins in small compensations

Mark as read

A hidden and repeated exception can open up far more interior distance than it seems.

Serious incoherence rarely appears complete from one day to the next. It can easily begin with a secret compensation: "I deserve it," "just this once," "no one needs to know." The gesture seems small and isolated. As it repeats, it forces you to protect an area from the sight of others and from your own conscience. You begin tending two separate narratives: what you show and what you justify inside. That division steals peace and simplicity. The way out also usually begins small: calling things by their name, telling someone who can help you, and cutting off a concrete occasion. Coherence does not demand never having failed; it demands stopping the feeding of hiding places and reuniting truth, desire, and conduct.

Key idea

Small hidden compensations can divide your life; early sincerity prevents that interior distance from setting in.

Your challenge for this idea

Identify an exception that you hide or justify, and explain it clearly today to an appropriate person who can help you.
