Don't compare your home with other people's shop window

Mark as read

With others you see the shop window; with your own family, you also see the back room.

Outside the home you see the best of everyone: the attentive friend, the family smiling in photos, the brilliant colleague. At home you see everything: the faults, the same old habits, the bad days. The comparison is skewed from the start. The people who live with you can't always be presentable. They also show you their tiredness and their fragility, and they put up with yours. That isn't mediocrity: it's trust. This doesn't mean denying the problems there may be at home or putting up with what does harm. It means comparing fairly and noticing again the good that, from seeing it so often, you've stopped seeing. What is everyday isn't worth less for being familiar.

Key idea

Compare fairly: from outside you see the best; with your own, you see everything.

Your challenge for this idea

Today, tell someone in your family one good thing about them that you take for granted.
