Dialogue is not surrender

Mark as read

Listening to someone who disagrees with you is not admitting they are right.

Often we do not listen out of fear: it seems that paying attention to someone with a different opinion is the start of giving in, so we shut down before hearing them out. But dialogue is not swallowing everything or pretending to agree when you do not. You can have very clear views and, at the same time, an open ear. In fact, ideas need friction to be refined. Surrounding yourself only with people who think like you gives a very comfortable security, but little by little it removes depth: you stop testing your views and grow accustomed to your own answers without ever polishing them. Truly listening does not weaken what you believe; it tests it. If it is solid, it comes out strengthened; if it had cracks, it is better to discover them in conversation than to defend them blindly. The humility of listening does not lessen your conviction: it makes it more honest.

Key idea

Your challenge for this idea
