1. What is cocaine?

Cocaine is a powerfully addictive alkaloid stimulant extracted from the leaves of *Erythroxylum coca*. On the street it is known by names such as coke, snow, blow, white, etc. Crack and freebase are smokable processed forms of cocaine. Street cocaine is invariably adulterated, cut with diverse chemical fillers and adulterants (often containing only 10% to 50% actual cocaine hydrochloride).

2. Effects of cocaine

- The effects of cocaine vary depending on purity, route of administration, dosage, and the user's biological susceptibility. In general, they can be divided into immediate and long-term effects:

Immediate effects of cocaine

  • Dilated pupils, nasal irritation, dry mouth and throat, intense thirst, and suppression of appetite and sleep. An intense surge of euphoria, artificial self-confidence, and energy due to central nervous system stimulation, masking fatigue until a sudden, severe crash occurs as the drug wears off. Extreme restlessness, rapid and disorganized speech, hypervigilance, and irritability. Loss of emotional self-mastery, with a marked tendency to flare up in sudden anger and verbal or physical aggression at the slightest provocation. Paranoia and acute anxiety. Even a single use can ignite intense cravings to take the drug again in order to recreate the fleeting rush of euphoria.

Secondary and long-term effects of cocaine

Physical Consequences Severe cardiovascular complications (tachycardia, arrhythmias, heart attacks, and hypertension); respiratory damage; gastrointestinal ulcers and ischemia; neurological damage and seizures; sexual dysfunction; perforation of the nasal septum, and loss of smell.
Psychological Consequences Severe depressive crashes, chronic insomnia, profound loss of motivation, explosive irritability, panic attacks, compulsive behaviors, vivid hallucinations, persecutory paranoia, substance-induced psychosis, and enduring personality deterioration.
Social and Interpersonal Ruin Domestic devastation, family estrangement, employment instability, loss of professional and cognitive competence, criminal involvement, spreading drug culture, and progressive isolation within toxic drug circles. Violent street conflicts, traffic fatalities, and desperate theft to finance an exorbitant addiction.

3. How can someone break free from cocaine addiction?

Cocaine erodes the human will and creates intense neurochemical and psychological dependence, making recovery demanding. Essential steps include: maintaining a structured and active daily schedule, cutting off all contact with drug-using circles and drug-associated venues, and seeking competent medical, psychological, and spiritual support (see drugs). Yet the simplest, safest path is never to start in the first place. Friends who successfully broke free consistently emphasize this rule of wisdom: the surest way to quit is never to take the first line; to avoid ever starting, never associate with people who use drugs; and never entertain curiosity or compromise.
