A. The Church of Christ

1. How to recognize the Church that Christ founded?

It is enough to locate the successor of Peter. The Lord chose Simon Peter as the firm rock upon which He built His Church. Those who follow Peter and his successors form the Church of Christ. It is something very well thought out by the Lord, since it is the way to find clarity. If Peter did not exist, how could one know which institution or bishop faithfully follows Christ? It could not be known.

2. How is the successor of Peter known?

He is the Pope or Roman Pontiff. There is great clarity on this, since the complete list of the successors of Peter has been preserved. In some Masses the first ones are remembered: Linus, Cletus...

3. What is the mission of the Church?

The same as that of Christ: the eternal salvation of men (heaven).

4. Is it not the mission of the Church to resolve social problems?

No. No. That is the general mission of men, and in particular of rulers who have the money and write the laws. It falls to them to achieve a just distribution of goods. In any case, the Church resolves many social problems through charity. But it is not her mission: Christ did not come to earth to resolve economic difficulties (social doctrine).

5. How does the Church fulfill her goal of saving souls?

By carrying out the two great tasks that the Lord entrusted to her:
  • The task of teaching, transmitting Christian doctrine.
  • The task of sanctifying, administering the sacraments.
  • To carry out these two tasks an organization, an authority, and norms are needed, as in any human society. A third task thus appears: that of governing, directing and planning the other tasks.

B. Churches and cathedrals

1. Is it good to build splendid cathedrals and churches?

It is very fitting, and manifests the love for God of the Christian people, who with great effort wish to devote the best to divine worship.

2. Does the Church give a bad example with so much wealth?

Churches and cathedrals are not a material wealth of the Church. They only cause maintenance costs. Whoever wants to do business does not build churches but apartments or football stadiums. Churches are built for the worship of God and only bother those who do not love the Lord.

3. Would it not be better to give that money to the poor?

It is good to devote attention to the poor and to God. And normally the people who care for the worship of God also take an interest in those in need. And the reverse: where there are no churches, the poor are treated worse.

- I recall an event that took place in a poor neighborhood. They were going to build a church and were proposing a simple but decent building. Voices arose proposing a sort of shack. Then the workers of the neighborhood themselves demanded the more dignified church, saying something like: "the poor have the same right as the rich to honor God in the best possible way".
