You are not only the roles you play

Roles organize life and express real responsibilities: professional, parent, daughter, student, or caregiver. Over time you can confuse what you do for others with the totality of who you are. When a stage ends, an emptiness appears that cannot be resolved by hastily replacing a label. You need to recognize capacities, bonds, and a dignity prior to every single function. For the Christian, divine filiation offers an identity that no retirement or failure ever revokes. That root does not make roles irrelevant. It allows inhabiting them with freedom and bidding them farewell with gratitude when they change. You remain someone capable of loving, learning, and receiving a new mission. Your identity uses roles; it is not exhausted inside them.
