Why are only men ordained priests?

It is a legitimate and very timely question: if man and woman share the same dignity, why are only men called to the priesthood? The answer does not lie in the personal worth of human beings. The Church forcefully affirms the equal dignity of woman and man. The reason is one of fidelity. Christ chose men as apostles, when he could have chosen his own Mother or women who were far more faithful than many of them, and he did not do so. The Church feels bound to that decision, not free to alter it at will. Priesthood does not mean "being more." It is a service, not an honorary rank. Greatness in the Church is not measured by ecclesiastical office, but by love, and to that holiness we are all called equally.
