Questions

Why should we follow rules?

Properly understood rules do not crush you: they guide you.

Nobody likes obeying meaningless rules. But a good rule is not there to take away life, but to protect a genuine good. In moral life as well, rules help us avoid improvising everything from impulse. Lived well, they educate our freedom and prevent harms that are sometimes seen too late. Freedom is not measured only by the number of available options. It grows when you recognize the good and have the inner strength to choose it even when it is difficult.
