When words are lacking you also pray

There are pains, joys, or fatigue that cannot fit into an orderly sentence. You try to pray and find only confusion, tears, or an absence of emotion. You can present yourself like that. A borrowed psalm, the name of Jesus, or remaining a few minutes before the tabernacle offer minimal form to a surrender that does not yet know how to speak. The Spirit intercedes even in that poverty. Not all dryness has a special meaning; sometimes you need to sleep, ask for help, or sort out a problem. But the lack of words is not equivalent to a lack of relationship. As happens between deep friends, shared silence can hold truth. Praying is not producing a speech for God, but allowing your whole reality to be with him.
