When receiving communion stops feeling normal

Mark as read

The extraordinary thing about those saints was how much they desired what you can receive.

Stories of wondrous communions speak of people who wept over being unable to receive communion, traveled difficult roads, or waited with immense desire. Their experiences were exceptional, but the question they leave behind is very ordinary. You can have the Eucharist close by and become so accustomed that you no longer expect anything. You arrive, you receive, and you move on. The problem is not the normality of Mass, but allowing habit to hollow out an immense encounter from within. You do not need to chase after a prodigy. You need to recover desire: knowing whom you are going to receive, preparing a little, and giving thanks afterward. Routine changes when love returns.

Key idea

Eucharistic wonder is recovered by desiring and preparing for the encounter.

Your challenge for this idea

Before your next Mass, arrive five minutes early and state in your own words why you want to receive communion.
