What is yours is not only yours

Owning things of your own is legitimate and good: it gives freedom, allows you to care for your family, and encourages work. Private property is not the enemy. But it comes with a built-in condition: the goods of the world are, at root, for everyone. That means that what you have, you do not have solely for yourself. You can use it, enjoy it, make it grow; and at the same time you are called to have it serve others too, especially those who have less. It is not about taking away what is yours: it is about not living as if the rest of the world did not exist. It shows in details: sharing, not wasting, paying fair wages, giving from what is left over and sometimes from what is not. Managing what is yours well while thinking also of others is one of the most concrete forms of loving.
