Watching a summary isn't studying

Mark as read

A video leaves you feeling you've understood it; the exam tells you otherwise.

Before an exam it's easy to fall into temptation: watching a video that explains it all in ten minutes, reading a summary made by someone else, going over pretty diagrams. It feels as if you've got it. Until you face a question and don't know where to begin. Videos and summaries can help you understand an idea or review. But they don't replace the work of wrestling with the topic yourself: underlining, making your own outlines, explaining it in your own words, doing exercises. What costs a little more is what stays. Really learning takes time and attention, not just images that go by quickly.

Key idea

Understanding by watching isn't the same as learning by working.

Your challenge for this idea

Today, study a topic by explaining it out loud to yourself in your own words, without looking at the book.
