Tolerating is not approving everything

Mark as read

Sometimes a lesser evil is allowed in order to protect a greater good.

Tolerance properly understood does not say that everything is the same. It recognizes that, in some situations, correcting everything at once can be counterproductive or unjust. This calls for prudence: knowing when to speak, when to wait, and when to set a clear boundary. The goal is not to remain comfortable, but to help the real good of the person and of the environment. A healthy relationship needs care. It requires fidelity, respect, patience, and truth spoken in the right way. When any of these is missing, perhaps outwardly everything looks the same, but inwardly trust begins to wear thin.

Key idea

Tolerance needs truth and prudence so as not to become indifference.

Your challenge for this idea

Consider whether today you need to correct something, wait for a better moment, or set a boundary.
