"Thy will be done" is not giving up
You do not ask God to do whatever; you ask to be able to will what is good.
"Thy will be done" sometimes sounds like resignation: let whatever has to happen happen. But it does not mean that. We do not ask God for permission to check out, but that he make us capable of willing and doing what is truly worthwhile.
It is an active request, not a passive one. You put your freedom on the side of the good: "help me choose what You choose." You do not shrink back: you align yourself with something greater than your momentary plans. That is why it gives peace without taking away initiative: giving up is letting go of the helm; this is handing it to Someone who knows how to navigate.
