Standing at the foot of the cross is a form of friendship

Someone else's suffering provokes helplessness. You look for words, solutions, or an explanation to justify your presence. If nothing works, the temptation to walk away appears. Mary and John beside the cross do not resolve the scene. They are there. That staying is not passivity: it endures looking at pain, shares time, and prevents the sufferer from being reduced to their misfortune. It also requires prudence. Sometimes accompanying will mean keeping silence; at other times, running errands, protecting, or seeking specialized help. You do not turn your presence into a spectacle or demand gratitude. The faithful friend accepts not being a savior. They can offer a human place within the unbearable and uphold the certainty that pain has not erased the bond.
