Sometimes it starts with asking a favor
Letting the other person help you also brings you closer.
When we want to get closer to someone who thinks differently, we usually start by giving: advice, explanations, arguments. And the other person, even if they don't say so, feels a bit lectured.
Sometimes the opposite works better: putting yourself in the position of needing something from them. Asking them to explain that thing they're so good at, to recommend a book, to give you a hand with a move. Suddenly the conversation starts on equal terms.
Someone who feels valued opens up more than someone who feels corrected. Letting the other person teach you something isn't losing ground: it's a good way to start a real friendship.
Key idea
Asking someone for help can open a conversation better than giving them advice.
Your challenge for this idea
Today, ask a small favor or a piece of advice from someone you hardly ever talk to.
