Some forgiveness doesn't send a bill

Mark as read

We forgive, but sometimes we keep the receipt.

We often forgive with a receipt: "fine, I forgive you, but for the record…" And in the next argument we bring it up again, like someone keeping a bill in the drawer just in case. That way, forgiveness never quite closes anything. The other person knows that what they did is still there, waiting to be used. And you don't rest either, because you're still keeping score. Forgiving for real isn't acting as if nothing happened, or pretending it didn't hurt. It's no longer using it as a weapon. That's how God forgives: he doesn't give you back his trust in installments or remind you of your mistakes every time you come back.

Key idea

Truly forgiving means no longer sending the bill for what you've already forgiven.

Your challenge for this idea

If you argue with someone today, don't bring up any old mistake you've already forgiven them for.
