The same task can shape different hearts

Mark as read

What you do has an influence, but it also matters for whom, why, and with what freedom you perform it.

Two people carry out the exact same service. One feeds resentment and a desire to come out on top; another learns patience and gratitude. The exterior action matches, but it does not produce exactly the same interior history. Intention does not turn unjust conduct into something good, nor does it replace the quality of the work. It does guide the meaning of an objectively good action. You can clean, study, or care as a simple burden, as a show, or as love. Renewing your motive shifts your attention. You discover the person who benefits, you offer up your tiredness, and you correct a gesture made in bad temper. Over time, repeated intentions shape the heart. It is not enough to complete tasks: you are also deciding who you become while carrying them out.

Key idea

Good actions shape people differently depending on the intention and freedom with which they are performed, without the motive replacing their objective truth.

Your challenge for this idea

Before starting a routine task, define who you want to benefit, and check upon finishing whether that motive changed your way of doing it.
