Respect your opponent
Disagreeing does not turn anyone into an enemy.
In sports, politics, class, or family, it is easy to look at someone who competes or thinks differently as a threat. Then you no longer want to understand them, only to defeat them.
Respecting your opponent does not mean approving of any idea. It means remembering that before you stands a person with dignity, a history, and reasons you might not know. Charity is also at stake in disagreement. Defending the truth does not require despising the person in front of you.
Key idea
The other person's dignity remains even when they disagree with you.
Your challenge for this idea
Speak today about a person with whom you disagree without caricaturing or insulting them.
