The reasons of the heart also unlock truth

Mark as read

An argument can be correct and fail to reach someone because it has not yet found their open door.

When someone holds a mistaken idea, you can accumulate facts and be surprised that they do not change their mind. But their stance is perhaps tied to a wound, a loyalty, or the fear of losing their belonging. Understanding those reasons does not turn truth into mere sentiment. It allows you to present it in a human way: recognizing the good they seek, avoiding unnecessary threats, and accompanying the time they need to integrate something new. Jesus did not speak to an abstract crowd; he encountered individual persons. Charity also improves the intelligence of dialogue. Ask what the other person is protecting with their position. Sometimes, when that need is welcomed, reason can finally be heard without sounding like an attack.

Key idea

Truth is better communicated when it also understands the affections, fears, and goods that sustain the other person's stance.

Your challenge for this idea

In a disagreement, ask what the other person fears losing if they accepted your point, and listen without refuting immediately.
