The question 'what do I lack?' can open up a new life

The rich young man had kept all the commandments and yet perceived a lack. He could have silenced that restlessness by comparing himself with those who did less. Instead, he dared to ask. 'What do I lack?' does not seek to despise the road already traveled. It makes room to discover an attachment, a calling, or a virtue that has not yet entered the center. The answer may not consist in adding more tasks. There is also the risk of asking it from perfectionism and living in restless self-examination. That is why it is asked before the loving gaze of Christ. It is not 'how do I become flawless?', but 'what step of love are you inviting me to take now?'.
