Praying for your friend doesn't excuse you from calling them

Mark as read

Praying for a friend doesn't replace listening to them, celebrating their birthday or showing up when they need you.

You can spiritualize a friendship so much that you talk a lot about God and little about life. And you can do the opposite: stay at the human level without letting Christ broaden that friendship. Faith brings the two together. It moves you to pray for your friend and to send them the message; to wish that they become a saint and to take an interest in their work, their tiredness and their small joys. What is eternal passes through the usual gestures. Praying for someone can give you light to ask their forgiveness, accompany them better or respect their pace. But it doesn't excuse you from being there. Christian friendship doesn't float above what is human: it looks after it and makes it greater.

Key idea

Christian friendship prays for the friend and also stays by their side.

Your challenge for this idea

Today, pray for a specific need of a friend and then make a human gesture related to it: ask, help or keep them company.
