Praise does not always know you

Mark as read

Someone admiring you can feel good without telling the whole truth about you.

A compliment can show gratitude for real work and encourage you to continue. It can also stem from a superficial impression, a self-serving comparison, or an image that does not match what happens inside. Receiving it maturely allows you to rejoice without needing to turn it into your identity. You give thanks, recognize the help received, and know that a specific quality does not sum up your whole person. Nor do you need to demean yourself to look humble. Praise becomes dangerous when you start protecting the version others celebrate. Then you hide limits and make choices for applause. Enjoy the recognition, but return to the more stable question: is what I do true and does it serve a good?

Key idea

Praise can encourage, but it should not become the measure of your identity or your decisions.

Your challenge for this idea

The next time you are praised, thank them without downplaying it and remember in silence someone who made that result possible.
