An objective bond is not yet a friendship
Sharing a surname, classroom, team, or community creates closeness, but does not guarantee a personal relationship.
There are bonds given by a structure: family, work, neighborhood, or shared faith. They carry duties and valuable possibilities, even if you did not choose each person.
Friendship adds knowledge, goodwill, and reciprocity cultivated freely. You cannot demand it simply because you share a space, nor call it a betrayal if it does not arise with everyone. You can offer conditions: attention, time, and gradual trust.
This distinction protects both levels. It allows you to fulfill objective obligations fairly without faking intimacy, and to receive as a gift the friendship that sometimes springs up within them. A colleague can remain a good colleague without becoming a confidant. When a friend appears, the structure ceases to be merely a function and takes on an unrepeatable face.
Key idea
Shared bonds create duties and opportunities, whereas personal friendship requires a free reciprocity that cannot be forced.
Your challenge for this idea
Choose someone from a regular group and take a step toward personal acquaintance without demanding a response: a question, a coffee, or concrete interest.
