Nobody performs surgery on themselves
For the soul, you need someone who can see you from the outside.
Even the best surgeon does not operate on himself, nor does the best doctor rely on his self-diagnosis. Yet with the interior life we try to do just that: resolving everything between ourselves and our own thoughts, which are precisely what is under construction. From within, it is easy to deceive yourself: magnifying what does not matter and missing what would be obvious to anyone else.
Spiritual direction is that: speaking regularly with someone of sound judgment about what happens within—prayer, work, struggles, decisions—letting them see the full map, and listening. It is neither dependency nor therapy: it is the Church's help to avoid walking blindly.
It brings embarrassment and a bit of reluctance, like almost everything that heals. But few things help you grow as much as a sincere, regular conversation where you do not hide.
