Faith

No human being is the source of your faith

Mark as read

The person who brought you closer to God deserves gratitude, but must not become an absolute condition for you to keep walking.

A spiritual guide, priest, family member, or friend can illuminate a decisive stage. When they leave, fall short, or change assignments, you feel that the spiritual path they opened also disappears. God truly acts through people, but is not confined to any one of them. Healthy guidance forms sound judgment, leads to the sacraments, and fosters a relationship with him that can continue when the mediator changes. This does not justify ingratitude or self-sufficiency. We need community, counsel, and new companions. Rather, it prevents turning a human bond into religious dependency. You can grieve their absence, keep the good received, and look for a way forward. The source was God; that person was a valuable channel, not the owner of your calling.

Key idea

Authentic spiritual accompaniment leads to a responsible relationship with God that can continue when a specific person changes or is absent.

Your challenge for this idea

Thank the person who was a channel of faith and name a practice, sacrament, or conviction that you will keep caring for even if they no longer accompany you.
