Morality is not a self-control technique

Mark as read

Mastering yourself is of little use if you do not know what good you want to love with that strength.

You can train discipline, endurance, and emotional control for very different reasons. Those abilities help, but they do not guarantee a good life. They can also be placed at the service of ego, harshness, or an efficiency without compassion. Moral formation asks about direction: what goods deserve to order your intelligence, your will, and your affections. Self-control stops being a show and turns into the ability to keep a promise, deal with justice, or surrender an unfair advantage. It is not just about standing strong before desire, but about learning to desire better. Virtue integrates energy into an oriented life. Without love and truth, discipline can easily construct a very efficient cage.

Key idea

Self-control becomes a virtue when it is oriented by truth and placed at the service of love and justice.

Your challenge for this idea

Review one of your habits of discipline and write down who it truly benefits and what good it protects.
