Maturity discovers that others exist

Childhood necessarily begins centered on its own needs. The problem appears when that logic survives entirely intact: people are valued only for what they facilitate, celebrate, or prevent. Discovering that others exist means recognizing desires, weariness, and plans that do not revolve around you. You ask before taking up their time, you accept a no, and you can rejoice in a good in which you are not the protagonist. This shifting of focus does not require disappearing or abandoning legitimate needs. You too are one of those others worthy of care. Maturity seeks a shared reality where no one is a mere instrument. The world becomes less comfortable, but much more true: it is inhabited by free persons capable of surprising you, correcting you, and offering you something you could not have produced alone.
