Mastering a small appetite

Mark as read

The will is trained in things that seem minimal.

Temperance does not begin with heroic gestures. It often begins by turning off a screen, waiting before answering, or eating just enough without turning every craving into a command. Every appetite mastered with serenity educates freedom. It is not about living rigidly, but remembering that not every desire deserves immediate obedience. It helps not to go to extremes. Neither living pinched without joy, nor calling it freedom to always do whatever you feel like. Virtue takes another path: ordering desires so that they help you live better, not so that they rule over everything.

Key idea

Small self-masteries prepare freer decisions.
