Listening helps you find the right gesture

Mark as read

Goodwill is not always lacking; sometimes there is too much help that arrived before understanding.

In the face of suffering, you want to do something: offer advice, share an experience, or fix a task. The impulse is generous, but it may respond more to your discomfort than to real need. Listening allows you to discern. One person needs silence; another, information; another, your presence while seeking help. The same gesture does not serve in every moment. Concrete charity is born from that attention. It does not only ask "what do I know how to do?" but "what can they receive right now?" Sometimes the answer will be small and unassuming. For that very reason it can be more human: it adapts to the person instead of forcing them into your usual way of helping.

Key idea

Listening turns good intention into help tailored to the moment and the specific need of the person.

Your challenge for this idea

Before helping today, ask directly: "Do you prefer that I listen, that we brainstorm options, or that I do something concrete?"
